A Black Belt is not something you wear, a Black Belt is something you earn!

Out of 100 students, 10 become black belts, 7 become 2nd degrees, 5 become 3rd degrees. Only one becomes a Master. And out of every 100 Masters, only one becomes a Grand Master.
Why are our black belts really midnight blue? Philosophically, black is the darkest color possible, symbolizing death or an ending. Blue is like the ocean; seemingly, never ending. Midnight blue symbolizes the knowledge which has been absorbed, but it is not so dark that it cannot absorb more color (knowledge). Thus, the midnight blue belt is seen only as a new beginning, where a student may continue to learn and refine their technique, and begin to gain greater insight into their art. Black Belt is not the end. There is so much more beyond it. Therefore, our belts are midnight blue to remind us that we have much, much more to learn, and that what we have learned, we must seek to perfect.
